Chapter 6

Lucky woke up with his heart pounding and his eyes blinking rapidly. Where the hell was he? His panic eased when he looked beside him and saw Cole. He was in his coyote form, his beautiful black fur fluffy and cute around his face.

“I am so glad to see you.” Lucky leaned over and kissed his forehead, but Cole didn’t wake up.

Letting him sleep, Lucky looked around the room and found it was small but cozy. It had to be the bunkhouse where Cole lived, which meant they were on the ranch. Or rather, closer to the heart of the ranch since Lucky understood that Marshal Roberts pretty much owned the entire valley floor. Generations of his ancestors had run cattle here, and Marshal was determined to keep that tradition alive. Lucky knew this from Cole’s ramblings when they’d shared the fire that first night.

As Lucky swung his legs out of bed, he realized he was naked. Frowning, he looked around and saw a small stack of clothing on a table by the side door. On the hook on the back of the door was a towel, so he was fairly certain that was the bathroom. Padding quietly over on his bare feet, he opened the door, realized it was a shared bathroom, then locked the opposite door before he used the facilities.

His entire body hurt, and when he looked in the mirror, he remembered why. Last night came rushing back in hideous bursts of information. An orange-reddish streak of some chemical washed down his entire right side. Little dots marked where the shot had burrowed into his flesh. Bruises bloomed all over his chest, back, and belly. Tentatively, he touched the areas. He felt pain, but as he continued to explore, he didn’t feel any pellets below his skin. They had been thorough. Lucky wondered how long it had taken the men who had helped him.

Vague memories of Cole talking to him in the truck came back. He mentioned something about a veterinarian named Dooley and a doctor he just called Doc. As Lucky stood there in the bathroom grateful for their work, he worried belatedly about Cole. How terrified he must have been. Just the tone of his voice in the truck had been strained with worry. More than anything in the world, Lucky was grateful they were still together. Now that they were at the heart of the ranch, it was unlikely Edwin or Hector would bother them again. The marks from their beating would fade right along with his memories of them. For that, Lucky was also grateful. If he never saw the men again, it would be too soon.

As much as he wanted to shower, Lucky didn’t want to cause any further damage to Dooley and Doc’s handiwork, so he wrapped a towel around his waist and returned to the main room. On the couch, peering at him with his head tilted curiously, was a man with short brown hair and lavender eyes.

“How are you feeling?”

“Better.
